Tega Brain, Alex Nathanson, & Benetta Piantella [Solar Protocol] Both an artwork and an activist intervention, Solar Protocol is a global network of solar-powered web servers, supported by steward cites around the world. By reconfiguring internet protocols with the logic of the sun, the project explores natural rather than artificial intelligence: decisions such as where internet traffic is sent and what content is displayed on the site are automated according to an environmental logic that depends on the season, the time of day, and the weather conditions. Solar Protocol proposes an alternative infrastructure that takes the contingency of weather patterns and other natural phenomena as its logical starting point, not as impediments to dominate or overcome.
