Alex Saum [ Potential Ideas and Other Things that Live in Your Gut ] An interactive poem exploring the genre of “product concept testing,” a type of survey aimed at capturing real-time feedback on a product concept by evaluating its strengths and weaknesses. Today concept testing serves as a valuable step in identifying the almost unconscious perceptions, wants, and needs of its users. The poem is built, stored, and displayed on Qualtrics, a cloud-based subscription software platform for “experience management” with wide distribution in academic settings. First designed as a marketing tool, it is the first employee management platform that measures employee experience through predictive intelligence. Confronting this institutional software, the reader is presented with potential ideas that explore their emotional and aesthetic response to a set of surprising biological facts about bacteria and human development. Reading and responding to the poem, the user is not only confronted with their inclusion within these practices of data extraction, but is also obliged to consider what forms of experience can resist this logic of quantification.
