Jennifer Jane Cannon [ Dinner Date ] A surrealist table placed in front of a monitor that loops a still video of a landscape, The Dinner Date directly comments on the myriad ways in which the simple activity of a communal meal has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The sculptural component of the work consists of a table that is set for two: one set of utensils appears to be on fire, the other set is entwined with spiked vines, while the meals themselves consist of charred wood harvested from a 2020 wildfire in California. These unexpected and upsetting details, while calling to mind traditional artistic techniques that invert the comfort and ease of habitual routines, gain a more immediate and realistic valence given the danger that currently accompanies our most commonplace, day-to-day activities. Similarly, the burnt wood and the accompanying image of an empty landscape gesture towards the unease with which we today confront the nonhumnan world in which these everyday routines are situated.
